RESUME PITFULLS and HOW to AVOID THEM

1. POOR E-MAIL ETIQUETTE
HR Complaint: It's impolite when applicants mass e-mail their RESUMES to several companies all at once. It shows that they don't really care what company they get into. They want a job, any job.
REMEMBER: Proper e-mail etiquette is a sign of good breeding and respect.

2. SLOPPY RESUME
HR Complaint: I get turned off by sloppy RESUMES. if the applicant can't come up with a decent resume, its a sign that he/she will turn in sloppy work if hired.
REMEMBER: Think of your RESUME as a self-promotional tool. Sell yourself well with decent and presentable RESUMES.

3. WORDY, GENERIC and LENGTHY
Watch Out For: RESUMES that are more than 3 pages, long and wordy paragraphs, not using bullet points, too generic and listing down duties and responsibilities instead of accomplishments.

TIPS:
Instead of making general statements
ex: Managed employees in a restaurant setting.
Write down details and specifics
ex: Recruited, hired, trained and supervised more than 20 employees in a restaurant with P2 million in annual sales.
Instead of listing duties
ex: Regularly updated departmental files for my BOSS and other members of my department.
Write down your accomplishments
ex: Reorganized 10 years' worth of disorderly files, making them easily accessible to department members

REMEMBER: Highlight your accomplishments by using specific details and reader-friendly format and layout.

4. OLD and OUTDATED STYLE
HR Complaint: Some applicants have been taught old styles of RESUME writing. They have not realized that there are newer and more current styles that are more refreshing and impressive.
Watch Out For:
* "Certified" RESUMES
* generic, erroneous or self-centered objectives
Note:
Unless specified or required, certification statements are not necessary for private commercial employers. RESUMES are supposed to be truthful and accurate. Instead of adding a certification statement saying that it is so, use the space for more important information.
Remove statements like these:
I hereby state that the above information is true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief.
Signature
Name

Note:
Objectives are still acceptable today, especially for new graduates. But professional summaries are more current.
Instead of writing generic career objectives
ex. To be able to enhance and use my ability in a job that will give me advancement.
Try writing a professional summary that shows your skills and what you can contribute to the company
ex. Over 3 years experience in Customer Service with the ff competencies:
* excellent communication skills in written and spoken English
* efficient in sorting out all the services and products-related complaints quickly.

REMEMBER:
Ask not what the company can do for you. Instead, tell us what you can do for the company.
